Total production of compounds, blends and concentrates, including integrated poultry units, during the month of October 2022 declined by 38,100 tonnes or 3.5 per cent from the corresponding month a year previous to 1,060,000 tonnes of output. Furthermore, the total under review was 23,900 tonnes or 2.2 per cent down on the decade long average for the month.

Total feed production during the month of October 2022 was made up of: 45.0 per cent poultry feed, 31.7 per cent cattle and calf feed, 15.3 per cent pig feed, 4.2 per cent sheep feed, 1.5 per cent horse feed and 2.4 per cent other feed.

A 15,000 tonnes or 3.0 per cent fall from a year earlier brought total poultry feed production for October down to 476,900 tonnes. This was the third year in a row in which poultry feed production in the month under review had fallen below its year previous counterpart and was the lowest total for the period in six years. As a result, the current total was also 9,500 tonnes or 2.0 per cent below the 10 year average for October.

For the second consecutive year, total cattle and calf feed production for October fell below its year earlier counterpart, in this instance, by 3,200 tonnes or 0.9 per cent to 336,100 tonnes. Output for the month under review was at its second lowest tonnage over the past decade and in consequence, was 13,200 tonnes or 3.9 per cent down on the 10 year average for October.

For the fifth month in succession, total pig feed production failed to match its year previous total. October production in 2022, at 159,400 tonnes, was a substantial 20,200 tonnes or 11.2 per cent down on the output of a year earlier but was more or less in line with the decade long average for the month which it fell just 100 tonnes or 0.1 per cent below.

Total sheep feed was one of only two feed production sectors to surpass its year previous return, rising to a record high 44,800 tonnes, an increase of 4,500 tonnes or 11.2 per cent. Moreover, the total under review was a significant 8,500 tonnes or 21.0 per cent in excess of the 10 year average for October.

Following a substantial drop in output in the October of 2021, total horse feed production grew by 1,800 tonnes or 12.2 per cent to 16,500 tonnes. This rise resulted in the current total outpacing the decade long average for the month by 600 tonnes or 3.7 per cent.

At 26,300 tonnes, total other feed had fallen by 6,100 tonnes or 18.8 per cent to its lowest October total since 1994. Additionally, 2022’s output was an even greater 10,300 tonnes or 32.8 per cent under the 10 year average for the period.
