dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health today announced the launch of a new environmental footprinting capability within Sustell®, enabling users to calculate end-to-end footprints using their own crop production data.
The development comes at a time when sustainability reporting, customer expectations and supply chain transparency requirements are increasing across the food and agriculture sectors. While many environmental assessments still rely on generic datasets and industry averages, companies are seeking more accurate ways to measure and demonstrate the impact of their sustainability initiatives. Crop production can be a significant contributor to feed and farm footprints, yet generic emission factors often fail to reflect the realities of individual supply chains. The ability to incorporate primary crop production data helps bridge this gap, providing a more representative view of environmental performance across the animal protein value chain.

Sustell® users can integrate primary crop production data directly into feed formulations and animal farm footprint calculations. This creates a connected approach to environmental measurement, helping ensure that the impact of crop production is accurate and transparent across the animal protein chain.
The capability also supports Forests, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) reporting, enabling companies to incorporate primary crop and ingredient data into FLAG-aligned environmental assessments. This helps organizations improve the accuracy, transparency and credibility of sustainability reporting while supporting Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) requirements.
By providing greater visibility into environmental impacts, the new Sustell® crop capability helps organizations better understand environmental hotspots, improve decision-making, support sustainability reporting requirements. It also helps companies respond to growing customer, retailer and supply chain demands for credible environmental data and greater transparency across agricultural value chains.
Sustell® is the world’s leading ISO-assured animal protein footprinting platform, supporting comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) across crop production, feed manufacturing, animal production and processing.
Dr David Nickell, Global Head of Sustainability at dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, said: “Many sustainability assessments still rely on average crop data. By enabling companies to use their own production data, Sustell® helps turn environmental measurement from an estimation exercise into a more accurate representation of real-world performance. This gives companies greater confidence in their sustainability reporting while providing a more comprehensive view of environmental impacts across the value chain.
